Special Populations
Equip yourself with specialized knowledge to support the safety, independence, and overall health of aging adults.Â
This course dives deep into the physiological, environmental, and pharmacological factors unique to older populations, focusing on evidence-based screening and intervention strategies to minimize fall hazards and maintain mobility. Â
-
Understanding Geriatric Physiology: Explore normal vs. pathological aging processes, including age-related changes in vision, proprioception, muscle mass (sarcopenia), and bone density (osteoporosis).
  -
Intrinsic & Extrinsic Fall Factors: Differentiate between internal risk factors (gait/balance deficits, acute illness, orthostatic hypotension) and environmental hazards (poor lighting, rugs, improper footwear).
  -
Fall Risk Screening & Assessment: Master validated clinical evaluation tools—such as the CDC STEADI initiative, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and balance tests—to identify high-risk individuals early.
  -
Polypharmacy & Fall-Risk Medications: Identify high-risk drug classes (like sedatives, antihypertensives, and anticholinergics) that impair cognition or stability, and learn deprescribing review protocols.
  -
Targeted Interventions & Home Modifications: Design personalized, strength- and balance-building exercise prescriptions while making practical, setting-specific adjustments to living environments.
  -
Post-Fall Management & Recovery: Learn post-fall evaluation protocols, safe transfer techniques, and strategies to address the fear of falling to prevent functional decline.
 Â
This course is designed for healthcare providers, therapy professionals, fitness specialists, and senior care personnel who work directly with older adults and need to proactively assess, prevent, and manage fall-related risks.
